Staying at Tjärö
How do you stay at Tjärö?
You can stay in everything from double rooms in the hotel with WC/shower, to 1-5 bed rooms in the hostel.
Can you bring and stay overnight with a dog?
Yes, dogs are welcome. Please let us know when you book so we can book you into dog-friendly rooms. Dogs must always be kept on a leash as Tjärö is a nature conservation area.
How do I pay for the room?
If you haven’t paid online in advance, payment is made when you check out. You then also buy ferry tickets if you need them. For groups and conferences, it’s also possible to get everything, including the restaurant bill, on invoice.
Have we booked a hotel room or hostel, and what’s the difference?
We have ten hotel rooms, the rest are hostel rooms. Through all booking channels, hotel rooms are explicitly called “hotel rooms”. If it says, for example, “Double room with private WC/Shower”, it’s a hostel room. Hotel rooms always include bed linen, towels, bed making, and final cleaning. They also never have bunk beds, are generally larger than double rooms, and have nicer bathrooms. Feel free to email us if you have further questions.
Can you put up a tent?
Yes, there is a camping site at Tjärö. It’s located at Korpaberget, centrally on the island. See map here, also available at reception. The camping fee is 95 SEK/person or 250 SEK/family.
Restaurant and café
Do I need to book a table?
To be able to eat in the evening you need to reserve a table, as we are very busy during high season and can’t always accommodate walk-ins. Breakfast and lunch don’t need to be pre-booked, however we appreciate if you pre-book breakfast when staying here and know you want this.
We don’t take bookings for lunch, there’s always space available!
Can I bring my dog to the restaurant?
Dogs are welcome on the glass veranda and the wooden deck outside. When booking a table, it’s always good to let us know if you have a dog with you.
Experience and activities
Tjärö is a nature conservation area, what does that mean?
A nature conservation area is an area that exists to preserve biological diversity, protect valuable natural environments and enable rich outdoor life. On the County Administrative Board’s website you can find the regulations that apply to Tjärö. County Administrative Board Blekinge Tjärö
What can you do at Tjärö?
At Tjärö there are hiking trails, swimming opportunities, canoes, sauna, pedal boat and a sauna raft. There’s an outdoor gym and Stand Up Paddleboards. For booking canoes, SUP, pedal boat, or sauna raft, please contact the reception!
Are there any swimming spots on the island?
Yes, there are several swimming spots around the island. A map is available at the reception with all marked swimming spots, otherwise there are many rocky beaches to choose from.
- Ällingaviken, surrounded by meadows and old oaks, facing the archipelago and protected from fresh winds from the open sea.
- Pellakrok, large grass areas and beautiful sea views.
- Korpaberget, at Korpaberget there are both flat and high rocks and a pier called Korpabryggan.
- Nabben, a popular place for families with children where you swim from low rocks.
What hiking trails are there and how long are they?
There are three marked hiking trails at Tjärö. They have varying natural environments and lengths. The blue one is the most accessible.
- Blue trail along the north side is 1.5 km
- Pink trail along Kalven is 1.6 km
- Yellow trail along the south side is 3 km
Can you fish at Tjärö?
Yes, there are several piers and rocks to fish from and no fishing license is needed. You provide your own fishing equipment.
Can you grill/make fires at Tjärö?
At Tjärö there are a number of fixed grill sites that you’re welcome to use for grilling and fires. There’s also a grill to use outside the self-catering facility. Remember that you may only make fires at the designated grill sites.

Can you hold conferences at Tjärö?

Can you arrange weddings at Tjärö?
Unfortunately we don’t arrange weddings at Tjärö, we can warmly recommend Magasinet Järnavik, Hoby Kulle Herrgård, and Eriksberg nearby.
We are a larger party, how does that work?
If you are a larger party, we always want you to book via email or phone regardless of whether it concerns accommodation and/or dinner.
Accessibility, facilities, and travel options
How do I get to and from Tjärö?
Our own ferry runs between Järnavik and Tjärö, you can find the timetable here
During high season there’s also the possibility to take the ferry from Karlshamn and Ronneby. These trips are organized by Blekingetrafiken:

Where do I buy ferry tickets?
You buy ferry tickets at reception or the restaurant before departure from Tjärö.
Can you take a stroller on the ferry?
It’s perfectly fine to bring the stroller with you on the ferry to Tjärö.
Can you bring your own food to cook?
Yes, in the self-catering facility there are refrigerators, freezers, stoves and kitchen equipment as well as grills.
How many people fit in the self-catering facility?
There are 6 stoves, three large refrigerators and one smaller freezer as well as several sinks.
You can fit about 15-20 people.
Is there a shop on the island?
There’s no grocery store at Tjärö but we have a kiosk with drinks, snacks, candy, hygiene products and toys.
Is the island wheelchair accessible?
No, but it’s fine to travel with a wheelchair on the boat and it’s easy to be around the restaurant and café/reception on the wooden deck. Otherwise it’s natural terrain and gravel road up to the houses. The large toilet in the restaurant is wheelchair accessible.
Can I take the car to the island?
No, there are no roads for cars on Tjärö. Parking is available in Järnavik, where the ferry to Tjärö also departs from. Parking is free of charge.
Is there parking? What does it cost?
There’s plenty of parking in Järnavik and it’s completely free.
How do I find the ferry?
Is there a sauna?
Yes, there’s a sauna in the Service House. Otherwise there’s our wood-fired sauna raft for 10-12 people to rent that you row out to with a small boat from Lerhallsbryggan.
Are there WC and shower facilities?
Yes, there are facilities in the Service House behind the self-catering facility. Toilets are also available in the restaurant. In the accommodation houses there are also toilets and showers.
Is there a washing machine or dishwasher?
No.
Can you cycle at Tjärö?
No, it’s difficult to cycle around the island as there are winding paths and difficult terrain. Walking or running works fine.
Guest harbor
How many boat berths are there at Tjärö?
80 berths distributed across two piers.
What does it cost to moor in a natural harbor?
Voluntary fee of 50 SEK/night for water and waste management on the island.
How deep is it in the boat harbor?
Depending on high water it can vary. But about 1 meter at the shallowest berth and 5 meters at the deepest.
Can you book a boat berth at Tjärö?
Unfortunately it’s not possible to pre-book any harbor berth at Tjärö.
Other/History
Did Dag Hammarskjöld live at Tjärö?
Dag Hammarskjöld was a summer guest for a number of years at Tjärö. He then lived mostly in Anrick’s cottage. His canoe was moored here for a long time but unfortunately it has been missing for a long time now.
Why are the houses named as they are at Tjärö?
Most names have historical connections to the island in various ways, more information can be found on the information boards on the houses or in Leif Olsson’s book “Tjärö – an oasis in the Blekinge archipelago”. The book is available for purchase at Tjärö.
Who owns Tjärö?
Tjärö is privately owned, but has previously been owned by, among others, the Swedish Tourist Association and Bengt Berg (the founder of Eriksberg).
How big is Tjärö?
Tjärö nature reserve is approximately 83 hectares of land area consisting of forest, rock slabs and natural pastures plus 223 hectares of water area.
